How to “get things done” as a Projector in Human Design

As a projector, you’ve been told that you’re not supposed to “do” things.

But the common question after hearing that is “how am I supposed to get anything done?”

Let’s break it down.

1. You can do things, but you do things very differently.

Your energy is very, very efficient! The way you do something will be different than the way a generator does it. It’ll even differ on the centers you have defined as well. For instance, a Self-Projector will do things much differently than an Emotional Projector.

Doing things isn’t a problem. It’s sustaining the energy for doing that is the problem.

As a non-sacral being, the energy to do things, and what you do, is inconsistent. You’ll likely want to find shortcuts, minimize your efforts, and make things more systematic and automatic. All these are totally fine! There’s no shame in finding shortcuts (honestly, if there’s a simpler, easier, quicker way…why wouldn’t you?). There’s actually power in being able to spot the energetic waste and minimizing it. This is how you help the world become more energy-efficient.

The key to doing things is to recognize and accept that it’ll be different, it’ll be something you’re more efficient at, and it’ll be something that isn’t sustainable.

So instead of promising to work every day for 8 hours, find ways you can promise to get things done. Focus on the end goal or the project, not the time it takes you to do it.

I once worked with someone (as a freelancer) who wanted me to write blogs for her website to gain traffic. Anyone can do this. But how I showed up and did it was different.

I asked for ample time to complete the blogs (my timeline was a month and I asked to work ahead so that both her and I were happy about the timeline).

I didn’t set a specific time for me to work on it and I didn’t promise to have it done early. I knew I’d need to research a bit, rest, let the knowledge mull over, and then within that month-long time, I’d have rested enough to have the energy for creating those blogs.

In all honesty, it only took me about 2 hours, max, to write the 2,000-word blog for her. But I wasn’t being paid for the time I worked on it, I was being paid for the end result.

This is how you “do” things as a projector. This is one example of how you can reprogram people to work with your energy, instead of you working your energy to fit their needs.

2. Create systems and automations to help get things done.

Every time I wrote that blog, I got quicker at it because I saw patterns of how to save even more time and energy. I created a template, I found out when my energy was most ready to write it so I prepared myself for that time when it got close, I even had an automated AI helping me outline it sometimes too.

The little things that seem like they’re “not a big deal” to others, tend to be a big deal for us projectors.

For instance, when I was on TikTok, I found that the biggest energy drain wasn’t figuring out what to talk about, it was getting ready to film the TikTok. And that’s ultimately the reason I no longer post to TikTok right now.

It took me so long to set up my filming equipment in the way that felt correct for me, and to have to do that for every video, every day… HUGE energy drain. I didn’t have the sustainable energy for that.

So the option I could’ve taken to save time and energy would’ve been to have a section somewhere in my house that is 100% ready and set up for me to film whenever the mood strikes. But, me being me and liking my space to stay a certain way, I didn’t want to have it up all the time. So I didn’t and I chose to stop posting there for now.

Maybe someday I’ll return to it when I have more space and a dedicated area to film, but not right now.

Look for the ways that you can save your own time and energy. And see if these energy-drains are actually why you’ve felt resistance to being consistent with it or doing it at all.

3. Be consistently inconsistent and batch.

The last thing we’ll talk about is how consistency isn’t really consistency. Such as, even though you see someone posting consistently on their social media, that doesn’t mean they’re truly consistent in creating the same way.

What they’re really doing behind the scenes is creating a bunch of content one or two days out of the week (or month!) and then scheduling it to post throughout the rest of the week or month.

That’s consistent inconsistency.

Creative inspiration is inconsistent. The creative wave is inconsistent. So batching when the creative inspiration hits is the jackpot to staying publicly consistent.

Another example is that I’ve written 3-5 blogs in the last day or two. Whereas weeks have gone by where I didn’t really have much to say. But now that I’ve been in a more creation-focused energy, I have a lot to say, and I’m allowing myself to create whatever I want to create.

I know that I won’t post it right away, I’ll schedule it out. So I’m using the energy that’s here right now, getting the things that I want done, and then I know I’ll be resting when you read this.

That’s the beauty of batching and flowing with your natural energy.

It doesn’t have to be “on” all the time, you don’t have to “do” things all the time, you just need to maximize and leverage the energy you have.

That is how you get things done as a projector, or as a non-sacral being. Reflectors, manifestors and projectors can all use these tips to get the things done that they want to.

The difference is what your energy naturally wants to do.

Mine wants to think, formulate opinions and beliefs, gain knowledge, speak about my inner knowings and about myself, and be uniquely me. (If you’re familiar with the centers, you can see that I’m defined from the Head center down to the G-center)

So, what does your energy naturally want to do? And where does your energy go with the flow and show up inconsistently?

The first is what you tend to do every day. The second is how the universe shows up for you and lends you energy from around you.

How are you meant to “do” things? And how can you release the need to “do” things like everyone else, and start doing them the way you want to?

P. S. I worked with that blogging client for a few months before realizing I wasn’t truly aligned with the way she wanted me to speak in the blogs (Defined Ajna + Throat). And even though I got it done the way I wanted to, I still decided to let that $400/mo. client go so I could free up my own energy for something more aligned. This is a reminder that just because it works and you can do it, doesn’t mean it’s aligned for you. Always check with your authority!

Choosing a Niche with Human Design

I’m sure you’ve heard the word “Niche” more than enough times already at the beginning of your business so far.

And beyond that, there are differing opinions everywhere too on whether you should or shouldn’t niche down.

But here’s the real scoop about Niches:
People think a Niche is a limiting box they need to fit into, but it’s not! It’s actually a way to help yourself get focused and get found by the right people.

And knowing your Human Design type can point you in the right direction.

Before we go any further, your niche could be either the audience you reach, the problem you solve, or both together. It depends on what feels correct for you.

For instance, life coaches can be niched down to a specific audience. The actual problem they solve is more open, while the audience they serve can be specific.

Or vice versa, you could coach anyone who needs help with a specific problem. The problem you solve can be specific while the person receiving the help is more open.

Or even a very specific niche using both sides can be something like teaching postpartum healing yoga to new moms. Again, it depends on what feels correct for you, but overall we’ll talk about which types should be more niched down and which types shouldn’t.

This applies to all types of businesses, like if you want to run a physical product store, a digital goods store, or whatever type of business you desire!

What you do will be enhanced by how you do it. And your type shows you how you best do what you do and how your energy wants to interact with others through you and your business.

Remember that no matter your type or energetic configuration, you’re able to build the business of your dreams and find your own version of success!

Niche by Type

Manifestors

You’re the trailblazer. Putting yourself into a niched audience won’t feel like freedom. While you’re waiting for inspiration, you don’t need to wait to find the right people. They will find you when you’re moving the collective forward! So instead of focusing on making content for your audience, let your niche form around you! Look instead at where you’re innovative. What area feels right for you to be forging ahead? Where do you see things are stagnant? Where do you want to be known for leading the new movement?

Generators

You’re likely going to have something that you’re passionate about from the get-go. Or perhaps you’ve always had a dream to pursue. Or maybe you’ve responded to something that continues to bring you enough variety while remaining the thing you love. Either way, niching down is the area in which you can thrive! Following the examples above, figure out whether you want to niche down in the problem you solve, the audience you help, or both. A specific niche can help you narrow in on what you want to talk about, instead of it feeling limited. And having a focused-goal may be just the thing to help you start creating the content you desire to.

Manifesting Generators

You’re meant to move quickly. It’s likely that you get bored around 18-24 months into a career. You tend to move through the challenges quicker and when there’s nothing exciting left inside a position, you’re ready for something else. Try to remain broader in the niche you choose. Give yourself the room to move and flow when your energy is ready. If you decide to niche down, remember that you have the ability to switch around what you do, and continue to make it fun for yourself!

Projectors

You’re the one who deeply understands systems and deeply sees others. If you continuously move around and don’t master one thing, you may later in life find yourself unfulfilled. You can always switch it up when you truly feel ready, however, give yourself enough time to master what you choose before moving on. You may find that once you master it, you do actually want to continue with it! Again, with the examples above, find the flexibility that works for you whether to choose a specific problem to solve, the audience to help or both. Give yourself enough time for deep periods of rest in between and make it something you do actually enjoy too! Burnout on a niche doesn’t mean that niche is wrong for you, you may just need time to rest and recoup your energy!

Reflectors

Your aura is so open that it’s not meant to fit into one box. You can shift, move, flow, and mold yourself to any situation that needs your attention. Play to this strength. Choose something broad and let yourself be guided where you need to go! Find the people that need your help, find the environments that feel open and exciting to you, and find the niche that feels like home.

Final Thoughts

Remember, Human Design can go much further into niching down than just using your type.

While your type is a great starting point, if you want to dive into the deeper aspects of your niche, (like the skills you naturally possess, how you help others, and whether you’re meant to teach or coach), check out the Niche by Design Masterclass. Creating a Business You Love Isn’t Just About What You Do — It’s Also About How You Do It

The untold side of the entrepreneur journey.

When I first started my business, I was lost. I knew I wanted to be an entrepreneur, but I honestly had no idea what I wanted to do to be an entrepreneur.

Luckily, you really only need a skill, knowledge, or experience in an area that’s further along than someone else in the world. Past that, you can create value around it.

For me, that looked like coaching, guiding, mentoring, and helping people navigate the failures I’ve already encountered throughout my own life. And then I spoke as well about my own battle with not fitting in, depression, and feeling like there was no one else like me. So it was a mix of inspirational content, self-help experience, and knowledge sharing.

But even though I knew what I was sharing (which is a feat of it’s own if you’re a new entrepreneur), HOW I was to share it was completely baffling. And even to this day, I can’t say that I figured it out quickly — because I sit here with almost 3 years of entrepreneurship under my belt and I only figured it out after 2 to 2.5.

Quick? No. Painful? Yes. Worth it? You bet.

So here are 3 helpful tips I learned about how entrepreneurship isn’t just about what you do, but also how. And hopefully, I can help save you the time and energy needed to figure this all out.

1. Even when you know what you do, explaining it can be a different beast.

It’s not enough to know what you do, because if you’re on your way to monetizing it, others have to understand it too. So you have to explain it.

I’m not saying you need the perfect elevator pitch (which doesn’t exist in my book), but you do need a handful of ways to say it that make sense.

For instance, not everyone will need the details, and not everyone needs the broad sentence. The difference is who and when you say them.

When your friends and family ask you what you’re doing, be broader (unless you find they’re really interested). This can sound like “I write online about entrepreneurship,” or “I guide people to creating their online business.”

As you can see, those are two general statements that make sense to the general population.

But when you’re in front of your ideal audience, be more specific. Such as “I use Human Design to help new entrepreneurs build an aligned, sustainable business,” or “I help new entrepreneurs build an online business that doesn’t cause burnout using Human Design.”

Both of those help my target audience understand what I truly do. And even then, I’m curating those for this particular platform.

It doesn’t matter what you say, as long as it’s understood. And you can always tweak this when necessary, so don’t spend too much time thinking about it. Get into conversations with your friends and family and just say what resonates in the moment. Over time, you’ll find the words that better describe it and it’ll become a more clear and concise phrase.

2. Past explaining what you do, what way do you want people to find you

This one caused me the most inner turmoil. I didn’t understand what this meant.

I kept hearing other business coaches and gurus saying to “follow your audience.”

That never worked for me. In fact, it was much more draining, exhausting, and caused me burnout (which is why I create content that challenges these streamlined pieces of advice).

It wasn’t until I started listening to my own energy and following where I felt comfortable and free that I saw success. And that took me years to figure out.

So how do you know when you’ve found the place for you?

Ask yourself these questions:

  • How do I feel when creating for this platform?
  • How do I feel after creating for this platform?
  • Do I genuinely enjoy this platform or am I forcing myself to do it?
  • What decision is the more loving decision: to stay on this platform or to leave it?

Don’t just consult your mind on this, feel into your body. How does your energy feel when you think about those questions? (If you know your Human Design Authority, consult that).

The point is, if you don’t love the way you do your day-to-day business actions, you won’t create a business you love. And that’s not fluff, that’s fact.

Keeping the end goal in mind, what kind of business do you want to build? And what support do you want to help you in sustaining it?

I’m not saying to stop doing the things you need to right now, I’m simply bringing the different possibilities to awareness. And if it feels good, continue on with it! If not, consider checking other things out.

3. Where do you feel like you truly thrive?

I started on Youtube, then Instagram, then Facebook, then TikTok, then Medium, then Blogging, then Podcast… and I switched back and forth interchangeably through these at different times trying to figure out what fit me. More so where I felt like I was free to be me.

Don’t knock it until you try it out, because resistance is a great signpost for what to look into. But also, don’t force yourself into a box that you don’t even want to be in.

Youtube was nice, still is. I just don’t want to dedicate my time there right now, though I know I probably will add it in the future again.

TikTok wasn’t my cup of tea, but I don’t mind posting every once in a while when I feel called to.

Video isn’t bad for me, but it also requires more energy from me. And as a Self-Projector in Human Design, I need to conserve my energy more than most people.

Facebook and Instagram were time-zaps for me and made me feel more bitter than anything good. I still have them for when people decide to join my community, but that’s really all I use them for anymore — community.

Now we get into my zones: Podcast, Blogging, Medium. I’m a writer at heart, and I resisted it for many, many years. But as soon as I finally allowed myself to truly test it out, it’s rapidly become my favorite thing to do.

Podcasting is another because it’s my own platform to just speak about my ideas and experiences and find new people like me who are interested in what I’m interested in.

I love being able to share my thoughts both with the written word and the spoken word. And as a Self-Projector in Human Design, that’s very aligned for my energy. (Believe me, if I had known about Human Design sooner I would’ve saved myself some huge headaches!)

These are the places I’ve found that I thrive. And I had to test them all out to see what felt good and how I truly enjoyed sharing my knowledge.

And it will be the same for you.

Final thoughts

Not everything will work for you, but something will.

I constantly say that everyone could be an entrepreneur. And I 10000% believe that to be true. But I also know that not everyone wants to be an entrepreneur, and not everyone is willing to put in the work to become an entrepreneur.

Either way, if you have this dream and you’re willing to do it, fail, persevere, and keep going, you will find success with it. Anyone who tells you it isn’t possible to build a business you love hasn’t been able to do it for themselves yet. Don’t let their projections sway you.

People only truly believe what they’ve done themselves. So find small ways to win, take comfort in the small successes, and keep going. Be your own best cheerleader, and cultivate your content consumption like your life depends on it. Spend time reading inspiration, not demotivation. Then put your desire into action. Take the steps. Move forward.

And you’ll inevitably get there, no matter what anyone else says or believes.

Giving Advice With Detachment

As a projector, it may be hard to detach yourself from the advice that you’re giving.

Why is this?

Because you care about other people!

And it’s totally normal to feel this way. No one wants to watch those around them struggle senselessly if one tip could help them save time, energy, or sanity.

But if you give advice, unprompted, you likely won’t be heard the way you mean it. It’s what I like to call “the Projector Paradox.”

The Projector Paradox is that even though we have so much helpful advice to give, we are only able to give it when it’s asked for.

There are some loop holes to this though, and if you missed yesterday’s blog post, you’ll want to read that one to understand the loop hole plus other tips you may not have know about being a projector. You can find that one here, it’s called What It Means to “Wait for the Invitation” as a Projector.

So other than having to wait for the invitation to give advice, what’s next?

It seems like a simple answer. “You just give the advice.”

But how many times have you given advice only to find out that the person who asked you for the advice completely disregarded it anyways?

Then they ended up in a worse off situation and if they had taken your advice, they would’ve solved it?

The amount of times this exact scenario happens in projector’s lives is steep.

And I’m sure you’ve felt the tinge of upset within you when you hear this scenario from the person you gave advice to.

So, I ask again, what’s next after you receive the invitation?

Let’s break it down.

1. You DON’T jump in and give advice right away.

This seems counterintuitive right? But just because someone has recognized you and invited you, DOESN’T mean that they’re open to RECEIVING advice.

So when they ask you for advice, first fire off some helpful questions for THEM to self-guide themselves.

What does that look like?

  • “Well, let me just make sure I understand this correctly, what’s the most important part of this situation to you?”
  • “Let’s look at it this way, if I was the one going through this situation and I came to YOU for advice, what would you say?”
  • “Which way are you leaning?”
  • “Do you feel like you want to do one thing more than the other?”

The objective here is to reword what they’re telling you, and ask them insightful questions that can help lead them to their own answers.

Of course, you don’t have to be as formal with the questions back as these are, but you get the point.

Why do we need to do this?

Most times, people are seeking validation for the way they want to go. Most times, they’ve already made up their mind what choice they want to make, they just want someone to suggest it too.

Both of these are reasons why it’s important to help them build trust within their own decisions.

Let’s be honest here, we’re not always right (no matter how many times we actually are).

No one EVER has more understanding of someone’s situation than the person who is DIRECTLY INVOLVED in it.

And even if we ask all the questions necessary to find out every bit of information about it, we still CAN’T know what’s the best option for THEM.

Why?

Because we HAVEN’T lived their life. We don’t know their priorities. We don’t know their fears. We don’t know every single previous experience that they’ve been through. And it would take as many years as they’ve been living to understand them entirely, because they would have to recount every single second with us.

Not only is that impossible, but it’s also just the entirely wrong way to handle any situation.

The next point brings us to why that is.

2. Help others build trust within themselves so they can handle challenges better in the future.

As a Coach myself, this is one of my BIGGEST goals with every client.

Because I don’t want them to have to depend on anyone else to make clear decisions.

Will there be mistakes along the way? Of course! We’re human. This is literally what we’re here to do.

And if you didn’t already know, mistakes lead to success. Failure leads to success. It’s all a learning process. And you actually fail your way to success.

That’s a topic for a different time, so let’s get back to this.

Asking insightful questions helps them pull out their own answers and their own true thoughts and feelings about the situation.

And not only that, but it shows them that they COULD do this for themselves in the future.

It shows them that they ARE the authority and decision maker in their own life.

It shows them that YOU support them no matter what decision they decide to make.

And it gives them the confidence that their decision won’t be judged harshly as they believe it will be. It’s only their own judgement of themselves.

When you help them build trust within themself, they feel SAFE. They feel COMFORTED. And they bond with YOU on a deeper level because they were able to find all these amazing things with you around.

I have a friend who actually comes to me instead of some of her other friends because she KNOWS that I won’t just automatically jump to one side or the other in a situation. I won’t lie to her and tell her she was right if in fact she wasn’t.

She comes to me because she TRUSTS that I have her best interests in heart for the LONG TERM, not just for some short term validation. She comes to me because I’m objective and I bring a unique perspective and great questions.

And above all, I LISTEN.

I don’t diagnose, I don’t rush to the rescue, I don’t try to fix; I LISTEN first.

Then I help when asked or when I feel she’s gotten it all out and is now ready for some open conversation.

Which leads me into point number 3.

3. Ask what they want from you first.

When someone recognizes you or is coming to you about a situation, ask what they want from you.

Do they just want to vent it all out? Perfect, you can be all ears and just listen.

Do they want feedback on their part in the situation? Perfect, you can prepare for that.

Do they want a total solution? Perfect, you can prepare for that as well.

Asking them what they need from you in the moment before the conversation has begun will lead you to 10x better conversations overall.

You won’t be overstepping any boundaries when you ask.

You won’t be rushing to fix something while they’re feeling left unheard because it seemed like you just wanted to fix them.

Essentially, you sidestep almost all miscommunication AND you deepen your bond with them because NOW you’re being there for them, the way THEY NEED; not the way YOU THOUGHT they needed.

And after ALL of that, if it comes down to it where, yes, they are seeking out your advice and your opinion, then go ahead. BUT make sure to release the expectation that they will take your advice.

For example, instead of assuming that they’ll heed your advice, assume that they won’t and let yourself be pleasantly surprised if they do.

And realize that they are their own person. They’re going to make the decisions most in line with themselves. And that’s OKAY. Because they’re the one that has to live with the outcome.

Everyone makes the decisions they think are best in the moment, with the information they had at the time.

And if you get upset with someone else not taking your advice, you’re giving license to other people to be mad at you when you don’t take their advice.

And I guarantee that YOU don’t like other people trying to force you to take their advice either.

So give your advice with detachment.

And if you follow the rest of these tips, you’ll find you have better relationships with those you care about, you’ll have more energy because you’re conserving it and not throwing it in all directions, and you’ll be happier because you’re releasing expectations of others from your mental capacity.

Energy Levels in Projectors

One of the biggest misconceptions I notice in projectors is that once we find out we’re a “non-energy” type, we take that as we can’t or don’t have energy for ANYthing.

Some projectors are energy projectors and some projectors are non-energy projectors, but this doesn’t mean what you might think.

So let’s dig into this to combat any misinformation you may have thought was true up until now.

First, what’s the difference between “energy” projectors and “non-energy” projectors?

The answer is: Not much.

Do energy projectors have more physical energy? Yes.

Does that mean that non-energy projectors have no physical energy? Absolutely not.

It’s the WAY you use your energy and how efficient you have to be with it.

There are 4 “motor centers” in the Human Design chart.

Motor centers provide stable, steady, and sustainable energy for doing things.

In order of how much energy they provide, here are the 4 motor centers:

  • Sacral Center – No projectors have this. This is only a center that Generators and Manifesting Generators have.
  • Emotional Center – Only Emotional Authorities have this center defined. So an Emotional Authority Projector has this center defined.
  • Root Center – This is found only in either Splenic Authorities, Sacral Authorities, or Emotional Authorities.
  • Ego/Heart Center – Any type can have this center defined, the ones that DON’T have it are Self-Projected Projectors, Mental Projectors (sidenote: mental or “no authority” types DOESN’T mean that the mind is the authority, but that’s a topic for another day), and Reflectors.

These 4 centers provide the extra physical energy to those who have them defined.

Therefore, if you have at least ONE of them defined in your chart, you’re classified as an “energy” projector. You can have any combination of them, but having at least one classifies you as an energy projector.

However, if you have none of those 4 motor centers defined, you’re classified as a “non-energy” projector.

I’m a Self-Projected Projector, so I’m technically classified as a non-energy projector. But as you can see, I have a blog, a podcast, and many other things that I do each day. So, what do these mean, really?

Like all types, you have more energy for the things you LOVE to do.

This gets frequently overlooked, but think about something you hate doing. How motivated are you to do it? Probably not very motivated.

Energy projectors have a motor center that they can TAKE energy FROM in order to “do” the things that they need to do.

Whereas with non-energy projectors, it’s MUCH more difficult, because we don’t have any baseline motor centers at the ready.

So practically, what do you do?

Like in all open centers, you take in and AMPLIFY the energy around you from those who have the center defined where you’re open.

So for non-energy projectors, just being around someone, in the same room or even on a call with someone who has a motor center, will help you get motivated and have a burst of energy to do the things you need to do. Because you take in that energy and amplify it.

But you may feel a “crash” after the person leaves, it could slowly fade or be more abrupt, it just depends. It’s kind of like a caffeine rush or a sugar rush.

The thing to remember is that you are not meant to HOLD this energy or sustain it. So having a detox at the end of the day, or consciously releasing the energy when you’re done is a cruical part of self-care. If you don’t release it, you’ll burn out.

And yet, at the same time, if you’re really passionate about something, you’re excited to do it, right? Yes! So you’ll find that you actually have much more energy for those things and thinking “non-energy” means that you can’t have energy is actually limiting you.

For me, I love to write. I love to sing. I love to dance. I love to learn things. I love to spend time with my friends.

And I can do all of these every day because I give myself ample time to decompress AND relax in between them.

I take multiple naps a day.

Seriously, like 2 or 3. And while some other people may see that as “lazy”, it’s something that helps me recoup my energy to continue on throughout the day. So F what everyone else says. Do what feels GOOD and RIGHT for YOU.

The only limits you have are the ones you choose to believe are true.

All projectors need rest.

As a projector, regardless of anything else, you’ll need more rest than others (besides reflectors). But whatever way and whatever level of rest you find rejuvenating, that is the right level for you.

I used to overdo my rest because as soon as I found out I was supposed to rest, I took it as an excuse for me to do nothing. But that actually still drained me and I was SO confused for a few weeks.

It wasn’t until I liberated myself from overdoing the self-care that I realized I didn’t need THAT much. Granted, I still need a lot, but not 24/7.

And if you’re a projector who’s thinking “I don’t really need much rest now that I think about it,” that’s totally fine!

Some people only need the weekend to themselves. Some people only need one self-care thing per day. Some need multiple. Some need mainly self-care. It literally doesn’t matter if you need more or less, there’s no right or wrong. There’s only what’s correct for YOU.

Likewise, some people get energy from rest, others get energy from being more active. It’s YOUR body. What feels good for you?

Seriously, toss out ALL the expectations and ALL the “standards” and really ask yourself what is right for you.

You will find you have more energy around others.

Like I stated above, open centers take in and amplify the energy around them. So you may find that you have a lot of energy depending on the situation you’re in or the environment you’re in.

Even if you’re an introvert, like me, others may actually mistake you for an extrovert in certain situations becuase you’re essentially riding on a caffeine high of energy when you’re around them.

So if you think you’re an introvert, you probably are. And this may explain why you feel so talkative or so energetic around others.

There’s even more caveats in Human Design, so if any of this doesn’t “fit” you exactly the way I wrote it, don’t get discouraged. Human Design is called a Living Experiment for a reason.

Experiment with it. Experiment with your life. Find out what works for you. FInd out what makes sense right now and use that. It may make sense in the future. You never know unless you try and test it out.

But if you only take one thing from this article, as a projector, you aren’t limited to just doing nothing. And you DO have energy. You just have to learn to work and flow WITH it, instead of against it.

Happy experimenting!

What it Means to Wait for the Invitation as a Projector

When most people find out that they’re a Projector in Human Design, they get discouraged.

We see the “Wait for the Invitation” as our strategy, and it’s like our worst fear is being realized: We can’t give advice to everyone because they don’t want it from us. And we need to wait for them to come to us for advice in a specific way.

Ouch.

If you’re like me, this caused you to have a mini ego-death.

Since we were kids, we just see everything that’s wrong in the world.

We see how it could be better — much, MUCH better.

We’re efficient.

With the low-level of energy we have (not as low as you might think, but that’s a topic for another day), we try to conserve it and save on time while at it.

And when we see others wasting their time or energy on something that could be easily tweaked to make it 10x more efficient, of course we want to help them and tell them!

So reading that we need to “wait for the invitation” and sit here and watch as other people all around us make so many mistakes… it’s like torture.

A bit melodramatic, eh? Perhaps. But it’s still true.

But what does “wait for the invitation” really mean?

Thankfully, it’s not as strict as it might seem.

“Wait for the Invitation”

First, what does this NOT mean?

  • This DOESN’T mean you have to sit around doing absolutely nothing while you wait.
  • This DOESN’T mean you can’t post on IG, FB, or other social media platforms about your ideas.
  • This DOESN’T mean your opinion isn’t needed.
  • This DOESN’T mean you have to wait for a formal invitation in the mail (though sometimes, for events, that may be a thing, but not for every situation)

If that doesn’t cheer you up a bit already, I know when we break this all down it will. So let’s take a look at what you CAN do and what this DOES mean.

1. You have been given the GIFT of time, energy, and selection.

Waiting for the invitation means that you can sit back and study the things you LOVE. You can master the things you truly care about. And have fun while you’re improving your skills as you “wait” to be invited.

Think about it, would you rather spend your time learning about the things that make you a “nerd” OR constantly be trying to find people who need your help out in the world every day, needing to promote yourself heavily, and talk about yourself 24/7?

My guess is that you’d rather sit back and enjoy the ride.

But then why are we SO engrained to take option 2 before we find Human Design? Because we were taught that if we didn’t “go out and get it, it’ll never come”.

But I have fantastic news for you. That belief is bullshit.

Your energy speaks for you, protects you from the people who aren’t right for you, and gives you the peace and solace to learn anything your heart desires.

2. You can 100% still put yourself, your work, and your passions out there so that people CAN find you when they need you.

Remember how I said you don’t want to be promoting yourself heavily 24/7? I meant in a sleazy, unaligned, yucky feeling way.

Now what you CAN do, is make sure that you are visible.

Which means to find what feels good to YOU and do it.

If you’re an artist, find yourself a platform to showcase your work. This could be Etsy, IG, FB, or many other platforms that are more niche.

If you’re a business constultant, post content on your platform of choice. Are you more of a writer? Perhaps start a blog. Are you a visual person? IG would be great. What about voice and video? Youtube and TikTok are amazing. There’s even podcasts or other voice audio apps.

Seriously, the world is your blank canvas.

What do you TRULY like to do? Do that. And do it in a way that really makes you happy. Because that is how you’re going to find your freedom, fulfillment AND success.

Sounds amazing, right?

If you’re still not yet convinced that being a Projector is a blessing, not a curse, let’s look at the last two points. I think they’ll change your mind.

3. You can still give advice WHENEVER you want to.

Again, remember how I said we aren’t supposed to go around telling people our advice because they don’t want it from us? That’s partially true. Here’s the loop hole:

  • You can give ALL the advice that you want, as long as it’s GENERALIZED or SELF-IMPROVEMENT.

What does that mean?

Well you know how Jenny was telling you about her boyfriend issues and you REALLY wanted to tell her all the red flags about him? If you were to specifically tell her about HIM, without her asking your advice, it’s going to go unheard.

BUT

If you talk about YOUR OWN previous experience with the SAME red flags you’re seeing in him, without trying to “push” the information on her, then she’ll hear you.

Likewise, let’s say you are that business consultant and you want to create content for your audience. You CAN still create content in a GENERALIZED way.

So instead of pointing out one or two people, talk in bigger terms.

Or talk in “I learned this” ways. Self-examples and storytelling from personal experiences.

Talking in generalized terms goes against SO MANY “business rules”, but if you test it out, you might realize it’s the best thing for YOU.

4. An invitation can be direct or indirect.

What does that mean?

A direct invitation is when someone blatantly asks you a question or specifically asks for your advice. Such as “Hey, can you tell me what [this tip] means from your post?”

That’s them recognizing you and asking YOU because they want to learn from YOU.

Another example from the Jenny scenario, is if Jenny was to straight ask you for your advice on the situation. “What would you do?” or “Do you have any advice?”

That’s a direct invitation.

The trickier ones are the energetic invitations. AKA the indirect invitations.

Let’s say you’re in a conference meeting and your boss asks the room for ideas. That’s an energetic invitation because he’s opening the conversation to anyone in the room.

However, it’s a weak indirect invitation. Meaning that even though he opened it up to everyone, that doesn’t mean you jump straight to your novella of ideas right away.

In this case, test the waters out and say one or two things. If you’re invited to share more or elaborate, that’s a direct invitation after an indirect invitation.

Another indirect invitation is how you feel around the person you’re talking to.

If you FEEL like you’re being seen and heard, without forcing yourself to be seen and heard, then you have an indirect invitation from them. Their ENERGY is open to you.

For instance, if you have friends that you hang out with, you already have an invitation with them (usually) and can openly give your advice where you see fit.

There are certain scenarios where you won’t have an open invitation from them, but that’s a topic for another time as well.

As you can see, “waiting for the invitation” is not as strict as it first seemed. It’s actually a blessing.

Because guess what? You GET to save your energy.

You don’t have to fix everyone around you. You can just focus on yourself and enjoy your life.

And when you DO get an invitation, it’ll feel SO much lighter, brighter, and happier within the energy of it.

So, what are you going to do now with all your newfound free time and the extra energy?

The One Thing That Comes Before An Invitation As a Projector

As a projector, I’m sure you know the importance now of waiting for an invitation in doing what you do best — giving advice. However, if you don’t, you may want to take a quick peek at the blog post I wrote about invitations a few days ago. You can find it here.

But what isn’t talked about a lot is the thing that comes before an invitation, and it actually commonly gets misconstrued as an invitation.

I’m talking about… RECOGNITION.

What is Recognition?

Recognition is what you get from someone who truly SEES your genius and learns from you.

It’s when someone DM’s you and says “Thank you for creating this!”

It’s when your friend says that they love having you as their friend.

It’s when your teacher says they were happy you contributed in class today.

Recognition comes in many different forms, and just like invitations, it can be direct or indirect.

However, just because someone recognizes you DOESN’T mean that’s an invitation.

Wait, what?

Yep. As if deciphering an invitation wasn’t already hard enough, now we throw recognition into the mix.

But fear not, because I DO have a surefire way to help you decipher between the two going forward.

So let’s say that as a young projector, you’ve been told over and over again that the people around you don’t want your opinion.

I know, it sounds harsh, but a lot of projectors actually go through this.

Let’s say you are used to either getting backlash for trying to help others with your advice, or people try to ignore you now because they know you’ll try to tell them a better way to do something.

After years of this when we’re younger, we learn a few things that AREN’T true but FEEL true:

  1. When I give my opinion, I actually hurt others.
  2. If I reach out to anyone, they’re going to ignore me.
  3. I’m going to get rejected if I say what I truly feel.

Now, yes there are other things that we learn that deal deeper with our self-worth, but that’s a topic for another time.

The point is that we get so used to being shut down that we inadvertently have this complex in our minds that we need others approval before doing something — anything.

Enter, the Projector Paradox.

The Projector Paradox

The Projector Paradox is a term I made up, so you won’t find others using it. But let me explain why this is such a paradox.

Imagine being so observant to what others are doing that you could help them by telling them a better way to save time and energy.

Except, you can’t tell them because they haven’t recognized you — meaning that they won’t actually hear anything you say until they’ve recognized you.

But you still see it.

And they’re still wasting their time and energy.

What do you do?

Hence, the Projector Paradox. Which I guess could also be called the Invitation Paradox or the Recognition Paradox, depending on your preference.

The even crazier part here is that even if you WERE recognized by them, that doesn’t mean they’re open to your advice still.

Which just adds another layer onto the entire paradox!

I don’t know about you, but my head is spinning.

So let’s get out of the damn paradox, and find what we can do and what recognition is all about.

Recognition is your confirmation.

Treat recognition as your confirmation from the universe, (higher power, God, whatever you want to call it), that you’re heading in the right direction and that you’re on you life purpose path.

Recognition is someone else telling you they value you.

They value what you do, how you’ve helped them, and what you bring.

Recognition happens both before AND after an invitation.

We tend to speak about invitations and recognition like it’s a one time thing. But it’s not. We’re in a constant cycle of it.

Recognition happens, then an invitation, then recognition again, then another invitation, and so on.

Someone can recognize you for different topics you are knowledgeable about.

They can recognize you for different levels they didn’t realize you knew about those topics.

So, as you can see, recognition is NOT an invitation to give advice, but rather a gratefulness for YOU as a person, doing what you do.

What do we do with this?

As I’ve said, recognition comes both before and after an invitation. And there’s a way around recognition so that you can just continually receive invitations without needing formal recognition.

What’s that?

RECOGNIZE YOURSELF FIRST.

Yes.

Again, seriously.

Recognize yourself, your value, your genius, and your worth first.

When YOU recognize yourself, you’re CONFIDENT in what you say, what you do, and, ultimately, you’re confident in WHO YOU ARE.

Your energy is your greatest billboard. It speaks for you.

When you’re confident, you show it.

When you’re confident, you speak up.

When you’re confident, you allow yourself to shine.

And how do you become confident?

You RECOGNIZE YOURSELF.

The Projector Paradox 2.0

Another layer that I hadn’t told you yet was that you actually DON’T NEED others recognition.

You need YOUR OWN recognition.

And when you recognize yourself, you actually start to put yourself out there and you allow others to find you.

When you allow others to find you, you add value and bring impact to people’s lives.

When you add value and impact to people’s lives they want to invite you because they can tell that YOU’RE ready for the invitation.

Recognition is merely a step for you to show up and stand up to say “I’m ready for invitations.”

And once you really absorb and feel this to be true, you’ll start to see the shift.

Because all you ever needed was to recognize yourself first.

So what are you ready to be recognized for?

Recognize yourself first, and see what changes you make that then allows others to experience the you that is ready to be invited.

To Niche or Not to Niche as a Projector

The first thing I thought when I learned that my energy type affects my business is “well…shit.” Because I had such a negative outlook on being a Projector in business. I had barely any knowledge about what this was going to mean for me overall, I didn’t know how the heck invitations were supposed to work in business, and I didn’t want to niche down because it felt like putting myself in a constrictive box.

Now, today we won’t go into everything I just laid out, but we will go into the whole Niche dilemma. And I’ll get to the rest of those topics in the future.

If you haven’t read the blog post or listened to the episode about Invitations yet, go check that out after you’re done here. I have a very different perspective on invitations that you may never have been told before – and it’s one of the secrets to your projector magic!

What’s a Niche?

Niche, (pronounced knee-shh or nee-sh), is an area or topic that you excel in and know at great lengths that’s specific to either the type of people you help or the problem you help solve.

For example, Business is not a niche. It’s a category.

You can niche down three ways:

  1. Work specifically with one area of challenges that you solve – regardless of who encounters the challenges.
  2. Work specifically with a certain group of people – regardless of what challenges you’re helping them solve.
  3. Do both so that you’re working with a specific group of people who have a specific set of challenges you help them solve.

For example, let’s say you’re a Pilates instructor. You could help Expectant Moms (that’s your who) that want to stay fit during pregnancy with Pilates (that’s the solution to the challenge they could be looking to solve).

There’s many different ways to niche down. These are two specific ways, but you could stay broader as well.

To Niche or Not to Niche – That is the Question

MY personal opinion is: YES.

However, hear me out because I don’t mean to go dig yourself a small hole of one topic.

Here’s the baseline question I like to ask:

  • Does it feel constrictive to you?

If it feels like too small of an area for you to be in, broaden up. If it feels like there’s wayyy too much to cover so you’re not really covering anything, niche down.

Ideally, you’re looking for YOUR sweet spot. And your sweet spot will look different than others. And that’s okay!

The best part is that you don’t have to niche down right away.

Start with what you DO know

If you’re not ready to go niching down because you aren’t sure about it yet, then don’t go too deep. ESPECIALLY if you’re just starting out as an entrepreneur.

Every single person who has started a business has pivoted, even if they don’t readily or up front tell you that they have.

It takes time and testing to figure out what works best for you. Give yourself permission to pivot. Give yourself permission to test out different things. No one else cares if you pivot; BUT they WILL care if they can tell you hate what you do. That kind of energy isn’t fun to be around.

So if you don’t know exactly who you want to help yet, don’t niche yet.

If you don’t know exactly what problem you solve yet, start with a category instead.

As you go and as you create content, you’ll figure it out by feeling whether you like to talk about certain things.

Pivot, Pivot, Pivot!

Anyone else having Friends flashbacks to Ross as they’re carrying the sofa up the stairs? No? Just me?

Live by this: Each time you take a step forward, you’re one step closer to figuring it out.

For me, I pivoted over 30 times in under a year. Why so many? BECAUSE I HADN’T FOUND THE RIGHT ONE YET.

AND as a plus, since I didn’t hold myself back from pivoting, I was able to take as many steps forward as I needed to in order to get where I am today. And I’m so freaking glad that I didn’t take multiple years to do it!

There’s NO shame in pivoting.

The only one stopping you from taking steps towards your future is YOU.

The only one judging your progress is you.

Think of it this way: The ones who say ANYTHING negative to you about your journey are the ones who AREN’T on a journey of their own. Because the ones who are on their own journey don’t have the time or care for what you’re doing since they’re focusing on themselves.

Another gem: Don’t take insult from those you wouldn’t even take advice from.

Just saying!

What it looks like IRL

Let’s say you eventually will want to be that instructor we talked about earlier.

If you don’t know that you want to teach Pilates yet, start with Fitness.

Start creating fitness content on your platform of choice.

When you’re creating this content, you’ll realize “wow, I like creating [this] type of content more” and do more of that.

When you start working with people, see which people you enjoy working with the most.

These are the ways to keep taking steps forward.

You’ll end up going from Fitness to Low Impact Fitness to Mindful Fitness to Yoga to Pilates. Not specifically these or in this order, but you see how it went down in niche across the progression. That’s what you’re doing.

Allowing it to progress naturally.

And that’s actually the last big thing we’ll talk about.

Don’t force it

Too many times I see people force themselves to fit in a box they didn’t even care for in the first place.

The more you allow yourself to natually move forward, the faster you’ll find your niche.

I know it seems counterintuitive, and as a Projector it may be hard to trust and lean back, but that’s the BEST, fastest, and easiest way you’re going to find what’s right for you.

Final Thoughts

So overall, should you as a Projector niche down?

Yes. But only to your sweet spot.

If you have questions on this, let me know! We’ll dive deeper in the future, this is just the basis. And tell me, are you a projector in business? Do you have a niche or do you despise the niche down idea?

5 Ways to Stop Burning Out as a Projector

One of the very first things I notice when Projectors come to me for help regarding their business is how burned out and drained their energy is.

They have their coffee in hand, the energy just seems more forceful and like it’s trying so hard to make it up a mountain.

But we quickly change that around in our call together.

One of the things I constantly hear is “I just feel so safe, heard, and like I can relax. It’s refreshing.”

This is not uncommon for Projectors — to be drained and burned out — but I will tell you that it is NOT a normal thing. You aren’t meant to be burned out. You aren’t meant to be constantly drained. You aren’t meant to be running on fumes just to get by.

So, let’s take a look at some of the things that could completely change this around for you in your own life.

5 things to do to stop burning out

Of course, this list could apply to more than just projectors. Anyone has the ability to burn themselves out. I just know that projectors seems to burn out more than any other type I’ve encountered so far.

1. Stop overcommitting yourself

You don’t have to be everything to everyone or be everywhere.

You need time to yourself to recharge. Even if you’re the most extroverted person, your projector energy needs time to rest and just detox from others.

You don’t have to go camping in the woods off the grid to achieve this, although you could if you want to! Usually this looks like saying “no” more often.

I know that may trigger some people-pleasing habits and all sorts of other limiting beliefs. So just take a moment and breathe. If these are coming up for you, try to figure out why this is your first response. Did someone tell you that you couldn’t say no if you wanted to be “a good friend”? Did someone show you that constantly working and going going going was the way to success? What is the underlying reason you may believe that you can’t say no?

Take a moment to dive into that. If you need help, you can consult the blog post I wrote last week about getting out of confusion. You can find it here.

But getting back to it; start saying “no” more often. Start prioritizing yourself. What would make you have more energy right now? Do you really want to go out or do you want to take a relaxing bath? Neither answer is wrong. It’s only about what works best for YOU.

Which this actually leads us to point number 2.

2. If you’re getting burned out from your business – make plans outside of it

I know you probably love your business (at least, you should! If you don’t maybe it’s time to check in and pivot), but you also need to spend time just doing things you LOVE that aren’t your business.

What are you passionate about?

What do you really enjoy doing?

If you’re not sure, it’s time to find some things that you do enjoy.

Test something new out. Think back to when you were younger, what did you always want to do or what did you dream of doing?

Start there.

3. Get in touch with friends

Especially right now with the state of the world, it’s important to keep in contact with those who you care about.

You don’t have to meet up with them in person, you can do a zoom call or Facebook messenger call. Find some way to connect to others.

It’ll help you get out of your own head. Especially for Self-Projected and Mental Projectors! I’m a self-projected projector too, and I know the lure my own brain has on me. But I also know that when I spend too much time up there, I start getting into overthinking and spirals that just aren’t healthy for me! Talking to others REALLY helps lighten that and helps me come back down to Earth.

4. Lessen your caffeine intake

I know, I know. Don’t throw your coffee at me yet!

You don’t have to give up coffee. You can start doing half decaf or full decaf instead.

The reason I say to lessen your caffeine intake is because it’s actually preventing you from getting truly in touch with your natual rhythms of energy.

Caffeine and sugar are two things that projectors tend to have an unhealthy amount of. Because we’re trying to prove that we can keep up with the world (and many time, surpass them!)

But believe me, it won’t help long term.

I used to have 12 shots of espresso per day.

PER

DAY.

That’s a looooot of fucking caffeine.

And when I didn’t have caffeine, sugar was my second option.

I felt fine at the time. But I spent one week without coffee or sugar and it was like hell. Withdrawls, brain fog, fatigue, etc. I honestly thought I was dying.

I realized then how much my body is affected by caffeine.

Again, I’m not saying to give it up completely. But perhaps reduce it.

You’ll start sleeping better.

And hey, if it doesn’t help at all, by all means continue on. I’m not a doctor, I’m just a person.

Find what’s best for you.

5. Drink more water

The population is very dehydrated as a whole. We’re barely getting enough water to stay healthy.

Try drinking at least 8 – 8 oz cups of water each day.

Again, if it’s not helping you, don’t listen to me. These things aren’t set in stone; they’re just what I’ve found helps most people I’ve talked to.

Water helps your body function as well as helps your brain, memory, and gives you energy.

There are definitely more things you could be doing to improve your energy overall, but start here. See what works for you and leave what doesn’t.

After all, it’s your life.

But I’d personally rather have more energy than not. So here are my ideas on how to start getting more energy and getting out of burnout.

I hope it helps you!

Good luck.

Where to be Online as a Projector in Business

There’s so much contradictory information out there about “what platform to be on to succeed”. And let me be the first to say: it’s all bullshit.

While, yes, there are certain places more people are, such as Instagram and Facebook, that doesn’t mean you HAVE to be there too.

ESPECIALLY if your energy just abhorrs those platforms.

Great news! You don’t HAVE to be on them if you don’t want to be.

So where should a Projector in business be online? Let’s dig into it.

First, step away from the business rules you’ve been taught.

Most likely, you’ve learned business strategy from Generators or Manifesting-Generators. I know I did!

I was SO upset with myself that none of the business strategies were working for me.

I thought there was something inherently wrong with me.

People didn’t like ME when I used those strateiges.

Why?

Because it didn’t FIT my energy.

It was like trying to fit myself in a box that was already full. I wasn’t even in the box at all. So I just metaphorically carried around the heavy box hoping one day I might be able to fit inside of it.

Narrator: that didn’t happen.

In fact, it only got worse because I got SO tired of carrying around the box.

It was draining, exhausting, and it really took the fun and enjoyment out of being in the business world.

I was so discouraged!

How did it change for me?

I started listening to my intuition, and you should too.

When I finally started just releasing what wasn’t for me, when I finally just set down the box and walked away from it, I started feeling lighter.

I started feeling like I could move freely again.

I felt like a breath of fresh air filled my lungs.

It did take me a while to recover, with the bitterness I felt and all, but once I did: I felt free from the heaviness that held me back.

I questioned “Okay, if all of that wasn’t working for me, what will?”

I started doing the exact opposite of what I was being told.

And, not everything needed to be the exact opposite, but the point is that I allowed myself to FIND what worked for ME.

And that’s where you may want to start as well.

So, where do you want to be?

Let’s say you scrapped everything you’ve been taught about how “business is supposed to look” right now.

And you were just leading with your energy and where you DESIRE to be.

What platform would you choose to be on?

Do you prefer short quips and dropping words of wisdom quickly? Twitter or platforms similar to Twitter may be for you!

Do you like community and being able to chat with other people, be in the support groups, and just give advice (with detachment of course!)? You may enjoy platforms like Facebook groups, Reddit, or other places you can gather virtually.

Do you like writing longer posts and really getting crafty with your words? Blog sites like WordPress, Medium, and similar sites would be great.

There’s a whole long list of other choices too, but you get the point.

And while we’re on the topic…

When you start scraping everything you’ve learned, you may notice that the niche you chose in the first place just isn’t what you want to do.

Some more great news: You can pivot and change it.

Most people don’t allow themselves the freedom to change their minds.

But why would you rather be stuck in something that you hate JUST to say you “haven’t changed your mind”?

What’s wrong with changing your mind?

Absolutely NOTHING is wrong with changing.

In fact, people who haven’t changed in months (or even years, yikes!), are the exact people who are stuck and stagnant.

Now, I’m not saying that you have to change your niche every few months or years, I’m saying that change bring evolution. No matter what area of life it is in. And you have the 100% choice to change whatever you want, whenever you want.

And ANYONE who tells you differently is just upset because they want to change too, but they don’t have the courage to do so yet. So they’d rather shame you than make the change themselves.

The Bottom Line

YOU decide where to be in life. YOU have the power to change your situation. And only YOU can figure out what’s in alignment with your energy.

Starting with your business platform if you want. But you could start anywhere else in your life if that feels right.

So, where do YOU want to be? And what do you feel YOU need to change to live a better, more aligned, life for yourself?

Have fun!
